Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, former President of India, dies in Shillong

GUWAHATI: Former President of India and renowned scientist APJ Abdul Kalam died after he was hospitalized in a very critical condition at a private hospital in Meghalaya's capital Shillong on Monday.

Kalam, 84, arrived at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Shillong, at 6pm to deliver lecture to post graduate students of the institute. He reached Shillong by road from Guwahati. He was supposed to addressed the students till 10.40pm on the same day.

After he reached IIM-Shillong, he collapsed around 7pm while delivering lecture to students and was rushed to a nearest private hospital.

The former President was also supposed to address the students from 10am to 12.30pm on Tuesday.

An IIM-Shillong faculty said that Kalam has been visiting the institute for last three years to address the students. This year it was Kalam's third visit to IIM-Shillong on Monday.

Kalam was the 11th President of India and held the post from July 25, 2002 to July 25, 2007.

He was a renowned scientist and is considered to be the main brain behind India's space launch vehicle (SLV) and missile programme.

Assam and Nagaland governor, PB Acharya said that the nation has suffered a great loss in the demise of Kalam. Acharya said that Kalam is not only a former president but also a highly respected scientist internationally.

In 2012 Kalam was in Guwahati where he attended the 14th convocation function of IIT-Guwahati. Speaking at the convocation function, Kalam told students that wanted to see a "silent" Brahmaputra emerging into a "smart" waterway in the country. Kalam told the students that it is his dream to make Brahmaputra the most vibrant waterway in the country.

8 dead in terror attack in Punjab's Gurdaspur district; one militant killed

Suspected terrorists wearing Army uniforms opened fire at a bus and attacked a police station in Gurdaspur district early today leaving at least eight dead and four persons injured. Among the dead were six civilians and two police home guards.

Media reports also state that one militant has been killed while a Punjab Special Service Group (SSG) jawan has sustained injuries in the ongoing operations.

The assailants came in a car and opened fire at a moving bus which was coming to Punjab from Jammu and Kashmir on the Amritsar-Pathankot highway. Four passengers who were injured have been hospitalised, SSP Gurdaspur Gurpreet Singh said.

The attackers then entered the Dinanagar police station and opened fire at police personnel. Three persons were injured there, including Dinanagar SHO Mukhtiar Singh, he said.

Security forces and the attackers have been exchanging fire for several hours after the incident, he added.

The area has been cordoned off and additional forces are being rushed to Gurdaspur. Army commandos and a Quick Response Team (QRT) have also been called in.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh has reportedly discussed the situation with Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and is said to have assured assistance from the central government.

Union Home Secretary L C Goyal has spoken to Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini, and is monitoring the situation. 

Meanwhile, union minister Kiren Rijiju said that he has spoken to the Punjab Police chief who told him that "no one has been taken hostage".

5 Different causes of global warming









Earth's climate is mostly influenced by the first 6 miles or so of the atmosphere which contains most of the matter making up the atmosphere. This is really a very thin layer if you think about it. In the book The End of Nature, author Bill McKibbin tells of walking three miles to from his cabin in the Adirondack's to buy food. Afterwards, he realized that on this short journey he had traveled a distance equal to that of the layer of the atmosphere where almost all the action of our climate is contained. In fact, if you were to view Earth from space, the principle part of the atmosphere would only be about as thick as the skin on an onion! Realizing this makes it more plausible to suppose that human beings can change the climate. A look at the amount of greenhouse gases we are spewing into the atmosphere (see below), makes it even more plausible.  The most significant greenhouse gas is actually water vapor, not something produced directly by humankind in significant amounts. However, even slight increases in atmospheric levels of  carbon dioxide (CO2) can cause a substantial increase in temperature. 

Why is this? There are two reasons: 

First, although the concentrations of these gases are not nearly as large as that of oxygen and nitrogen (the main constituents of the atmosphere), neither oxygen or nitrogen are greenhouse gases. This is because neither has more than two atoms per molecule (i.e. their molecular forms are O2 and N2, respectively), and so they lack the internal vibrational modes that molecules with more than two atoms have. Both water and CO2, for example, have these "internal vibrational modes", and these vibrational modes can absorb and reradiate infrared radiation, which causes the greenhouse effect. 

Secondly,  CO2 tends to remain in the atmosphere for a very long time (time scales in the hundreds of years). Water vapor, on the other hand, can easily condense or evaporate, depending on local conditions. Water vapor levels therefore tend to adjust quickly to the prevailing conditions, such that the energy flows from the Sun and re-radiation from the Earth achieve a balance. CO2 tends to remain fairly constant and therefore behave as a controlling factor, rather than a reacting factor. More CO2 means that the balance occurs at higher temperatures and water vapor levels.  
How much have we increased the Atmosphere's CO2 Concentration?

Human beings have increased the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere by about thirty percent, which is an extremely significant increase, even on inter-glacial timescales.  It is believed that human beings are responsible for this because the increase is almost perfectly correlated with increases in fossil fuel combustion, and also due other evidence, such as changes in the ratios of different carbon isotopes in atmospheric CO2 that are consistent with "anthropogenic" (human caused) emissions. The simple fact is, that under "business as usual" conditions, we'll soon reach carbon dioxide concentrations that haven't been seen on Earth in the last 50 million years.

Combustion of Fossil Fuels, for electricity generation, transportation, and heating, and also the manufacture of cement, all result in the total worldwide emission of about 22 billion tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere each year. About a third of this comes from electricity generation, and another third from transportation, and a third from all other sources.  
This enormous input of CO2 is causing the atmospheric levels of CO2 to rise dramatically. The following graph shows the CO2 levels over the past 160 thousand  years (the upper curve, with units indicated on the right hand side of the graph). The current level, and projected increase over the next hundred years if we do not curb emissions, are also shown (the part of the curve which goes way up high, to the right of the current level, is the projected CO2 rise). The projected increase in CO2 is very startling and disturbing. Changes in the Earth's average surface temperature are also shown (the lower curve, with units on the left). Note that it parallels the CO2 level curve very well.

Jodhpur Anti Tank missile tested from helicopter platform

JODHPUR: In fresh trials, India has test-fired its indigenously developed Nag anti-tank guided missile, which can hit a target upto seven km, from a helicopter at a firing range in Jaisalmer in Rajasthan.

Three-round trial of helicopter-launched Nag (HeliNa) missile were conducted on Sunday at the Chandhan firing range.

HeliNa is a helicopter-launched version of Nag and has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP).

"Two of the trials were successful in hitting the target, while one reportedly missed the target," defence sources said.

The missile was aimed at hitting targets at varied distances of upto 7 km.

Indian Army Newly launched Operation Shiva to secure Amarnath Yatra

Operation Shiva: For smooth conduct of the Amarnath Yatra

To provide security to those devotees taking part in the 59-day-long annual Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir, Indian Army in first week of July 2015 launched Operation Shiva. The Yatra started on 2 July 2015. 

The operation was launched on the basis of intelligence report suggesting that a group of 15 terrorists are likely to attempt a strike.

The operation will include Rashtriya Rifles unit, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for surveillance of Yatra route and cave shrine, combing of forests located along the Yatra track, Infantry Unit of Army, companies of Paramilitary Forces, CRPF and BSF.

Atal Pension Yojana

Atal Pension Yojana is a government-backed pension scheme in India targeted at the unorganised sector. It was originally mentioned in the 2015 Budget speech by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in February 2015.[1] It was formally launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 9 May in Kolkata.[2] As of May 2015, only 11% of India's population has any kind of pension scheme, this scheme aims to increase the number.[3]


In Atal Pension Yojana, for every contribution made to the pension fund, the government will contribute an equal amount to his/her fund. Depending on the contribution made between 18 and 40, at the age of 60 a sum of 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 4,000, or ₹5,000 will be paid monthly.[1][3]

This scheme will be linked to the bank accounts opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana scheme and the contributions will be deducted automatically. Most of these accounts had zero balance initially. The government aims to reduce the number of such zero balance accounts by using this and related schemes.[3]
